Richard Petrie is a Partner in the Atlantic Canada law firm, Stewart McKelvey, based in the firm’s Fredericton, New Brunswick office, where he maintains an active labour and employment law practice. He attended the University of New Brunswick (LL.B., 1990; B.A. 1987) and the University of Illinois (LL.M., 1990). Mr. Petrie has acted as principle legal advisor to employers in both public and private sectors including the following areas: universities; municipalities, transportation; airports, forestry and related manufacturing, auto dealerships, energy and financial services. Mr. Petrie’s practice is concentrated in representing corporate employers with respect to labour and employment law; including administrative and tribunal law, judicial reviews, arbitration, collective bargaining, contract and regulatory issues, wrongful dismissal claims, occupational health and safety matters; union certifications and unfair labour practice complaints. Mr. Petrie has appeared before numerous arbitration, labour relations and human rights tribunals in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Mr. Petrie is a frequent speaker on issues within his area of expertise. Mr. Petrie is recognized in both Lexpert Canadian Directory; Best Lawyers in Canada and Lawday’s Leading Lawyers for Employment Law, as a leading practitioner in the fields of Labour Relations Law; Employment Law; and Workplace Human Rights Law. Mr. Petrie is a member of Stewart McKelvey’s Partnership Board, and Chair of the Partnership Board’s Human Resources and Governance Committee.
