CHSR Broadcasting Inc.
CHSR 97.9FM is a 100% non-profit volunteer operated radio station. At the very basic level, CHSR produces a full schedule of radio programs which air 24/7. CHSR also broadcast a digital stream over the web, and also publish podcasts of some of our shows. Some CHSR programs are also syndicated to other radio stations, meaning that our locally produced radio can have a national audience!
Broadcasting since 1961, our mandate is to help under-represented artists and voices find an audience, and to help expose people to the greater world of music and opinion. We're also considered a hub for training and development. CHSR provides opportunities for our members to get real on-the-job training in a variety of fields, including audio engineering, journalism, administration, leadership and more!
CHSR is committed to highlighting our community, celebrating its successes and great features, but also holding a magnifying lens to problems or areas of concern. CHSR gives the community a voice, and reflect the city back to itself in a way that isn't possible on a commercial radio station.
Commercial stations offer safe music, safe opinions and a very limited range of options. We offer everything else, from a broader perspective on the world, to an unlimited selection of music. We provide a great forum for independent, local, regional, and national Canadian musical acts to perform and get exposure to the audience, something that is not offered anywhere else. We tell the stories about our community that are not being told by commercial radio or the national broadcaster.
